Brewing Hope with CASA/LA: Supporting Youth in Foster Care Through Every Cup | Black Aswad Coffee Co.

A Shared Mission of Love and Advocacy

At Black Aswad Coffee Co., we believe in more than just a great cup of coffee—we believe in community, mental wellness, and creating real change. That’s why we’re proud to partner with CASA/Los Angeles. CASA/LA is a dedicated team of staff and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA volunteers) who work one-on-one with children impacted by LA County's foster care system to ensure they have equitable access to resources and life-affirming connections to help them thrive. With deep love, justice, authenticity, integrity, accountability, and respect at the heart of their mission, CASA/LA is a lifeline for children facing overwhelming challenges.

The Urgency: Why Youth in Foster Care Need Our Support

The reality of youth in foster care in Los Angeles is heartbreaking:

•      Up to 80% of youth in foster care face serious mental health challenges.
•      Over 50% will not graduate high school.
•      On average 27% of LA’s unhoused population have spent time in foster care.

Many of these children have endured trauma, instability, and loss at a young age. Without a consistent support system, they are left to navigate life’s most difficult challenges alone. Youth in foster care often struggle with feelings of abandonment, lack of trust in adults, and difficulty forming healthy relationships. Their educational paths are frequently disrupted due to multiple placements, making academic success a steep uphill battle. The absence of permanent family support can lead to increased vulnerability, mental health struggles, and the harsh reality of aging out of the system without a safety net.

CASA/LA: A Beacon of Hope

Despite these challenges, CASA/LA is changing lives every day. By providing dedicated CASAs, they ensure that children receive the support they need to thrive. Their impact is profound:

•      74% of CASA-supported youth experience improved mental health outcomes.
•      62% see better educational achievements by the end of their case.
•      77% secure permanent placement, finding the stability they deserve.
•      57% children were reunited with their parents.

CASA volunteers’ step in to become trusted advocates, mentors, and champions for kids in foster care. They work to ensure that children receive the services they need, have access to quality education, and feel a sense of belonging. They offer a stable presence in a world that has often been unpredictable and uncertain for these children. Their advocacy embodies integrity and respect, giving youth in foster care the opportunity to build a brighter future.
